One-Time SEO Audit vs Monthly Retainer: Which to Buy in 2026

43% of surveyed businesses paid $101-$750 for an SEO audit; agency retainers average $3,209 a month. See what each buys and 5 questions to choose.

An SEO provider has offered you two deals. A one-time audit for a fixed fee, or a monthly retainer that never really ends.

The audit looks cheap. The retainer looks safe. Both can waste your money if they don't fit the job.

In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, 78.2% charge monthly retainers. Only 48.9% charge per project. So most pitches lean monthly.

This guide shows what each one really buys, what a year of each costs, and a simple way to choose.

Quick answer

Buy a one-time audit when you have someone who can make the fixes: you, a developer or an in-house marketer.

Pay a monthly retainer when you need ongoing work every month (new content, links, technical upkeep) and nobody inside to do it.

Not sure? Start with the audit. It tells you how much work there is before you commit to paying every month.

Key takeaways
  • An audit is a diagnosis. It finds the problems. Someone still has to fix them.
  • In a WebFX survey of 250 US businesses, 43% paid $101 to $750 for an SEO audit.
  • Ahrefs' survey puts the average retainer at $1,348.63 a month for freelancers and $3,209 for agencies. That's about $16,200 and $38,500 a year.
  • The most common one-off project fee in that survey was $2,501 to $5,000 (21.2% of providers).
  • The usual failure of an audit is not the audit. It's the fixes that never get made.

What You Actually Get With Each

A one-time audit is a check-up. A specialist reviews your site and hands you a report.

A good report covers technical health, on-page issues, content gaps and links. It ranks the problems and tells you how to fix each one.

Then the provider is done. Making the fixes is your job, unless you pay for that separately.

A monthly retainer buys a set amount of work every month. It may start with an audit too.

After that, the provider keeps working: fixing issues, writing or improving pages, building links and reporting on results.

The key difference is simple. An audit tells you what to do. A retainer pays someone to keep doing it.

What Each Option Costs in 2026

There's no official price list for SEO. The best public data comes from two surveys, one of providers and one of buyers.

  • Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers (published December 2023, updated August 2024).
  • WebFX, an agency, surveyed 250 US businesses about what they paid.
CostFreelancerAgencySource
Average monthly retainer$1,348.63$3,209Ahrefs
Retainer over 12 months$16,183.56$38,508Ahrefs × 12
Average one-off project fee$2,348.63$9,507.84Ahrefs
SEO audit price paid by 43% of businesses$101 to $750WebFX

Two caveats. Ahrefs' project fees cover any kind of project, not just audits. And Ahrefs used the top of each price band, so true averages are probably a bit lower.

Large sites pay far more. WebFX says full audits of big sites can run $12,001 to $15,000.

Bar chart of 12-month cost: average SEO agency retainer $38,508, average freelancer retainer $16,184, average agency one-off project $9,508, average freelancer one-off project $2,349, and seotools.pro Pro plan for 12 months $588.
What 12 months can cost. Retainers and project fees: Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers (retainers × 12). Tool: seotools.pro Pro at $49 a month on monthly billing, checked 25 October 2026. A tool doesn't do the work for you.

A year of an average agency retainer costs about 4 times an average agency project. A freelancer retainer costs about 7 times a freelancer project.

That gap is the real question. Is there enough ongoing work to justify paying every month?

The Audit's Big Problem: Nobody Makes the Fixes

An audit only helps when its fixes go live. That's where many audits fail.

SEO consultant Aleyda Solis listed common ways audits fail in a talk on making audits actionable (SearchNorwich, slides published 2020):

"the client never finished implementing the SEO recommendations"

"The issues were fixed based on what was recommended but they were undone in a subsequent update"

— Aleyda Solis, Orainti, "How to develop actionable and impactful SEO audits"

Her deck names other traps too: reports that are too long, and no clear list of the resources each fix needs.

So before you buy an audit, ask two questions:

  • Who will make each fix? You, your developer, or the provider for an extra fee?
  • Will the report rank fixes by impact and effort? A 200-item list with no order is hard to act on.

Google puts it well. An audit "should be about giving you realistic estimates of improvement, and an estimate of the work involved."

Buy a One-Time Audit If…

  • Someone can make the fixes. You, a developer or a marketer on your team.
  • You're planning a redesign or a domain move. Find problems before you rebuild, not after.
  • Traffic dropped and you don't know why. You need a diagnosis before a treatment plan.
  • You want a second opinion on a retainer you already pay for.
  • Your budget is tight. A fixed fee is easier to plan than an open-ended bill.

Here's how one Shopify store owner described the job they wanted done, in July 2026:

"I need someone to come in, do the work once, and hand it off — not an ongoing retainer."

— mshook3, Shopify Community, 12 July 2026

Their list was specific: feed cleanup, Search Console, Google Business Profile, analytics, redirects and schema. That's a perfect one-time job.

Google adds a timing tip. A great time to hire an SEO is "when you're considering a site redesign", and "the earlier, the better".

Pay a Monthly Retainer If…

  • You need new content or links every month to keep up with competitors.
  • Nobody on your team has time to make fixes or publish pages.
  • Your site changes often. New products, frequent releases, a big catalog.
  • Search is a main source of sales, so problems need catching fast.

A retainer only works when you can see what it buys. Before you sign, ask:

  • How many hours, pages or links does my fee buy each month?
  • What's the minimum term, and what happens if I stop?
  • Will you show me every change you make to my site?

Google suggests that last question too: "Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site".

And one red flag from the same guide: if a provider guarantees "first place in search results, find someone else."

The Third Option: Audit Plus a Fixed Project

You don't have to pick between a report and an endless bill. There's a middle path:

  • Step 1. Get an audit and a prioritized fix list.
  • Step 2. Pay for a fixed project to make the fixes and build what's missing.
  • Step 3. Track results yourself with a tool. Add more projects only when the data says so.

This is how our own SEO and GEO services work. Each package includes the audit and planning, then a set number of pages and backlinks.

There's no retainer by default, and you keep everything we build. If you want ongoing work later, it's quoted separately.

What a Good Audit and a Good Retainer Include

A good audit

  • Every issue explained in plain words, with the fix.
  • A priority order by impact and effort.
  • Who needs to do each fix, and roughly how long it takes.
  • Read-only access. Google's advice for audits: "only grant read access to Search Console".
  • A short summary you can share with your developer or boss.

A good retainer

  • A written monthly scope: hours, pages, links or tasks.
  • A log of every change made to your site.
  • Reports tied to your goals, not just rankings.
  • A fair exit: short notice, and you keep content, logins and reports.

The Verdict

If you can make the fixes, buy a one-time audit. It's the cheapest way to get an expert's eyes on your site.

If you need steady work every month and have no one to do it, pay a retainer. Make sure you can see what it buys.

If you're in between, get the audit, then a fixed project for the fixes. Track the results yourself and decide again in a few months.

In every case, the first step is the same: audit your website free and see how much work there is.

FAQ

Is a one-time SEO audit worth it?

Yes, if someone will make the fixes. An audit only finds problems. Without implementation, it changes nothing on your site.

How much does an SEO audit cost?

In a WebFX survey of 250 US businesses, 43% paid $101 to $750. Large sites can pay much more. WebFX says $12,001 to $15,000 for big, complex audits.

How much is a monthly SEO retainer?

In Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers, freelancers charged $1,348.63 a month on average and agencies $3,209.

How often should I audit my website?

There's no official rule. A practical rhythm: a quick automated check every month, a deeper audit about once a year, and one before any redesign or domain move.

Can I cancel an SEO retainer?

It depends on your contract. Check the minimum term and notice period before you sign, and make sure you keep your content, logins and reports.
